top online university programsFortunately, there are affordable online  degree programs throughout the country that offer online college degree courses, and courses on a campus community school near you during evenings and weekends. There is a way to earn your college degree without having to divert attention away from your current responsibilities.

There was a truly inspiring article published by The Daily News today that dealt with this very subject. The article is about Debbie Pinson, 39, works full time and is the mother of a 13-year-old daughter. Evening college degree programs weren’t a viable option, as Debbie didn’t want to sacrifice her evenings.

A community college near Debbie offered a new sort of “hybrid” curriculum that suited Pinson just fine. Sunday college education courses would be held at a nearby open campus school, each class lasting three hours. Debbie then had to fulfill three additional hours of distance education degree program through the course of the week.

Debbie works in customer service management, and said “I’m looking for new opportunities,” she said. “I want to invest in me.”

Whatever your current commitments, you owe it to yourself to further your education. Whatever field you’re interested in pursuing, earning your degree online or at a Campus School near you could change your life, tremendously.

CA Superintendent Gives $800K Back to His School System

And all the while, he’ll be earning a salary lower than a first year California school teacher.colleges that offer online degree programs

According to an article published by The Boston Globe, Powell was disheartened by Southern California school officials secretly boosting their salaries. “It’s hard to believe that someone in the public trust would do that to the public,” Powell said. “My wife and I asked ourselves ‘What can we do that might restore confidence in government?’

During such a trying time for college students, parents, and those who work in the field of education, Powell’s gesture has been warmly received.

College Football Players Recieve Millions in Grants

An article published today by USA Today takes a look at what college football players in need of financial assistance are given annually.

The article quotes a study by the Des Moines Register which found that athletes within the Big 12, Big  Ten, and Southeastern conferences alone received, collectively, grants and assistance beyond scholarships for online degrees of $5 million. Some individual grants awarded throughout the 2010-2011 school year were larger than $5,000.

How do the high profile scandals color the discussion of whether or not college athletes should be given as much money as they are?

Sam Powell weighed in on the subject.

Powell, who is currently the girls’ basketball coach for Des Moines East High School, received Pell Grants while playing  basketball for Drake between 1989-1991.

“I’ve always been a supporter in an athlete receiving something to make up for that (financial) gap between the cost of your  college degree scholarship and what it costs you to get by on a daily basis,” Powell said. “The bottom line is that you have a lot of athletes playing big-time sports who are coming from disadvantaged circumstances. They need something to get by.”

“It used to be that some youth just wanted to get a job right after high school” Fry continued. “Well, those jobs aren’t there anymore. No other segment of the population has been hit harder by unemployment than the 18- to 24-year-old.”
