Powell, who is currently the girls’ basketball coach for Des Moines East High School, received Pell Grants while playing  basketball for Drake between 1989-1991.

“I’ve always been a supporter in an athlete receiving something to make up for that (financial) gap between the cost of your  college degree scholarship and what it costs you to get by on a daily basis,” Powell said. “The bottom line is that you have a lot of athletes playing big-time sports who are coming from disadvantaged circumstances. They need something to get by.”

Hispanic college enrollment is at an all-time high, an article from the Orlando Sentinel says.

The article sited a study from the Pew Hispanic Center which said that there are currently 1.8 million Hispanic students enrolled in college education.
